The Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (PRODUCT)RED – What You Need to Know
On March 21, 2017, Apple Inc. announced the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (PRODUCT)RED. This was done without any of the fanfare usually associated with the launch of a new product or special edition. The phones are already available on the Apple online store and there is plenty of stock available in the retail stores too.
Although the price of the (PRODUCT)RED variant doesn’t differ from the other colored models, the phone only comes in 128GB and 256GB capacity. In terms of product specification these models are no different from the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus launched last year. So why buy this phone? Here’s why.
The First (PRODUCT)RED iPhone
First of all, this isn’t the first time that Apple Inc. has manufactured a (PRODUCT)RED piece. In the past, it has come out with (PRODUCT)RED Apple Watch bands, iPhone cases and many other accessories. It has even added (PRODUCT)RED branding to certain purchases and included extra characters in various games. Nevertheless, this is the first time that it has marketed an iPhone with the (PRODUCT)RED branding.
Secondly, while photographs may not do the color justice, users have all reported that the (PRODUCT)RED iPhone is very arresting and bright. The back comes in a matte finish and is made of aluminum. What may be the highlight is that the finish changes color when the light changes. Even when the lights are focused on it properly, the curved edges catch the light while the rest of the back panel gleams.
The anodized aluminum casing comes with an almost chameleon-like quality. The antenna lines merge perfectly with the body when there is no direct light but show up in bright lights. Even the raised area around the dual cameras looks different when the light angle changes. Also, the Apple logo pops out instead of matching the color of the back.
The Charitable Contributions
Perhaps most importantly, 50% of the profits from the sale of each (PRODUCT)RED iPhone are contributed to the Global Fund, an organization which fights AIDS worldwide. In fact, Apple Inc. has contributed a majority of the $465 million that have been raised by Global Fund – a reported $130 million.
Global Fund has been quite successful in its efforts to create a generation that is free of AIDS. So far, it has been successful in bringing the number of babies born every day with HIV from 1200 to 400. So when you buy the phone, you’re actually contributing to charity.
No Red Face or Ring Around Home Button
The points of contention so far with regards to the (PRODUCT)RED iPhone have been the look of the front panel and the Home button. People who were excited about the launch were looking forward to having a different front panel. However, the face of the phone isn’t red. Instead, it’s the same white glass front that you’ll find on all other iPhones. There was some speculation that the Home button might be ringed in red, but that too has a silver ring. So, when it comes to looks, the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (PRODUCT)RED might disappoint some.
Eventually, however the choice is yours. There is no doubt that the phone looks really good in the matte red finish and performs as well as the regular models. There is also the added satisfaction of having made a difference to the world when buying this phone.
